The Tempranillo component in
this wine was grown organically on the Ibarra-Young Vineyard in Los
Olivos. The Syrah and Grenache were grown on the Purisima Mountain
Vineyard in Los Olivos, which is owned by the Beckmen Family.
The grapes were crushed and fermented separately in small open top
fermenters and went through cool, leisurely fermentations. The
Tempranillo in this wine is from young vines, and on its own has an
intense blue-black color, deep stone fruit and chocolate flavors and an
impressive level of tannins. The Syrah adds a lovely spice and a rich,
berry fruit component, while the Grenache contributed a lively perfume
and flavors of wild strawberries. The lots were blended together after
fermentation for ageing in small oak barrels for 15 months. Most of the
barrels are neutral French oak, although there is about 10% new wood
used which adds an interesting, smoky layer of flavor and a touch of
sweetness. The wine was lightly fined and filtered prior to bottling in
March 2003.
This full-bodied wine is deep purple in color with aromas of black
cherries, currants and chocolate with a hint of strawberries. On the
palate, the flavors of ripe black cherries, plums and currants lead into
a long, spicy finish with hints of cinnamon and smoky bacon. Enjoy with
grilled and smoked meats, spicy dishes and ripe cheese.
